During 2011, the government and the statistics showed enough proof to the college goers to skip college, high unemployment rate, a harsh job market and the unnatural tuition hikes. An eminent person of the education industry in the US believes that the jobs and the industries that are growing are those that require higher education from the students. As per 2010 reports, it has been decided that 69% of the jobs that will be provided by 2018 will require higher education in order to qualify.

Eliminating yourself from college aid is one of the biggest mistakes

Yes, according to most recent reports, it has been revealed that the biggest mistake that students commit is they believe that they’ll not qualify for college aid with their present financial state. A study made in 2010 showed that around 2.5 million students would have been eligible for the Pell grant but they missed the free college cash as they didn’t apply and therefore they lost the golden opportunity of getting cash. While the students who attend the costly institutions apply for such college aid, the cheaper schools and colleges are not so informative about the college aids.

Filing for the FAFSA can make things favorable for a needy student

The FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid qualifies the students for the federal loans, grants and the other state-sponsored awards. If you remain aware of the date and file it close to the 1st of January, you may still qualify for the aid. If you’re still under the false impression that you should file your FAFSA application after you finish filing your tax returns, you’re mistaken. Actually by that time the money is already awarded and you may miss out the option. Federal grants are distributed at a first-come, first served basis and therefore you have to rush in order to get one for yourself.

Student loan debt – Ways in which you can repay them and live debt free

According to recent reports, student borrowing has exceeded the $100 billion threshold in 2010 and it may cross the $1 trillion in 2012. As student loan debt exceeded credit card debt, there are some students who are thinking about filing bankruptcy to charge off their student loan debts. Have a look at the debt consolidation benefits of consolidating your student loans.

You can combine the payments: You can combine the multiple payments into a single monthly payment as you have taken out a debt consolidation loan with a lower interest rate. Instead of having to make multiple payments to multiple lenders, you can make a single monthly payment to the debt consolidation loan.

The interest rates will be lower: The interest rate on the debt consolidation loan will be much lower than what you were paying on the educational loans and therefore the monthly payments will be revised and more affordable. You can even save a considerable amount of money in the long run and use it to repay all your other debt obligations.

The repayment term will be extended: The repayment term will be extended and as you’re a student borrower, you must be living on a fixed income due to which you may need to save a portion of your dollars every month for other financial purposes. Therefore, with a debt consolidation loan, you can easily extend the repayment term of the loan and reduce the monthly payments that you have to pay.

Alternative to bankruptcy: Students can certainly opt for this debt repayment tool as an alternative to bankruptcy as this way they can protect their credit score from getting hurt.

Therefore, when you’re looking for ways in which you can stay on top of your college finances by not incurring debt, make sure you get help from professional options so that you can easily stay off the cliff of debt. Then along comes an opportunity, a revelation, a sense of futility or some other catalyst which leaves the individual feeling they need to change. This can happen at any age. The issue is what to do next.

There are a number of ways to approach the problem. Not doing anything but continuing with the frustration is one. Investigating whether retraining in the chosen field is possible is another. If the person is in a relationship and has a family, discussing the sense of unease, and the need to change, with their partner is the start of perhaps making a momentous decision. Not only the individual concerned but the entire family will have to consider a change of lifestyle sometimes, even if it is only temporary. Assuming the person knows where they want to go, talking to people already doing the job might help. Sometimes the move is from one field to a completely different area, as in moving from being a corporate lawyer to working for a charity.

Does the age of the person is matter? Science has shown, that assuming good health, fewer brain cells are lost than was thought which means that at any age humans can learn. The adage ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ is wrong. If the will to learn is there, the learning is possible. The round the world yachts woman Ellen Macarthy’s grandmother took a degree in her 80’s. Opportunity had not been there for her earlier in life.

Was the first qualification a waste of time?

It might be thought that the original training was a waste of time and money if it is abandoned. This is not the case. The process of acquiring qualifications trains the person in searching out information, learning facts, being able to make connections between various sections of the subject and how it works with other subjects and, vitally, discipline. These are valuable assets. The original subject decision was right at the time but times have changed and something different is needed. Nothing learnt is lost but is part of the individual. Knowledge is always useful and some of the original qualifications might be of use in the new field.

There are those who complete their working life and on retirement spend a great deal of time doing academic courses for pleasure. If this is possible, then in this day and age where online degrees are getting more prominent, someone in their 40’s, 50’s or 60’s should have no problem spending some time acquiring the necessary qualifications to change career. The incentive is the wish to work in a new field, refresh the spirit and do a job which gives greater satisfaction.

How difficult is working in a new field?

The other aspect to changing a career later in life is an emotional one because doing something different challenges the comfort zone. Most humans become used to what they do and how they live. It’s familiar and while it may not satisfy completely does not have to be thought about just because it is routine. To alter that to try another way of earning a living can be threatening in a number of areas.

Starting in a new career will probably involve a cut in income, at least for a period of time. That can be an inconvenience for the family who have become accustomed to a certain standard of living. The impact of a need for change affects not only the person but their nearest and dearest. If someone has reached a level of status in society which is pleasing, to consider giving that up can be hard. Other members of the family might find it difficult to understand and this is where discussion and courage come forward.

Almost more important than these issues is the feeling of the person that what they want to do is right for them. The rat race is exhausting because it’s easy to become a workaholic. Work then takes the place of those aspects of life which give pleasure and satisfaction. Time spent just being, time with those the person loves, time to follow interests and time to appreciate the beautiful things in life. A change to a new career will probably be one which mature consideration has turned up. With experience people tend to look at the world with different eyes as they get older. Part of the decision to do something new will come from recognizing what is important to them and what is really just camouflage

If you feel ready to explore new opportunities take a look at our continuing education online channel which lists tips on adult education and colleges in various subjects. Change is never easy but sometimes it is worth the effort.

Consumer Behavior

Knowing what motivates or drives consumers or market segments to purchase various items can mean the difference between how particular products are marketed as well as to whom, when, and where. Beyond what motivates a shopper to shop and a buyer to buy, your consumer behavior coursework might also focus upon how to persuade consumers to purchase certain products, influence buyer behavior, and understand how and why consumers make the decisions they do concerning their buying practices.

Marketing Strategy/Research

Being able to research and strategize when it comes to marketing can play an important role in your job or career responsibilities once out in the field. Knowing and understanding how to analyze statistical information and data, conduct and collect research, and make determinations regarding competitors, products, market segments, market trends, and similar aspects of marketing might be key components to your marketing strategy and research coursework.

Branding/Brand Management

You might think that brand management would be easy once the market idea or scheme has been set in place. In hindsight it might seem like obvious choices to select Michael Jordan to plug Nike shoes, making them a common name among shoes producers, or making those big golden arches the symbol of McDonald’s, helping it to sell trillions of hamburgers. But the ways in which these brands were developed and managed along the way could easily have meant the difference between success and failure.

Managing a brand can be similar to raising a baby to adulthood. There is often a lot of time, effort, and money spent along the way, and plenty of mistakes made as well. A course in branding or brand management can help prepare a student for making the decisions that can affect the development and growth of a brand and that may determine the future success or failure of a product or brand.

International Marketing

Having an educational background in international marketing can be a valuable asset in today’s global business environment. As nations are brought ever closer together by way of products and services, international marketing can be an important course to have in your back pocket. How to market products in different countries, develop pricing strategies, determine logistical needs, and explore or prepare for societal and political factors or roadblocks can all be important aspects of marketing that might be explored in international market coursework.

Advertising and Promotions

You may find that your advertising and promotions coursework is one of the most significant aspects involved in your marketing degree education. Discovering what appeals to particular audiences, how to hook them with a catch phrase, jingle or glitz and glamour, and the ways and various vehicles that can be used to advertise or promote products and services might all be involved in your advertising and promotions class. With the internet now playing a significant role in advertising, a portion of your class may likely be devoted to this aspect of your studies as well.

All in all, as you can see there’s a lot to marketing and its getting hotter by the day with demand for people even with good analytic skills as numbers are now playing an even more critical role in analyzing trends in the internet world. Even if you’re getting an online business degree or a degree in math or engineering you can always minor in marketing in order to get your feet in the door of this hot field.

Helping Others

One fantastic aspect of working in occupational therapy is that it provides the opportunity to help others. Teaching and re-training people who have been injured or suffer from a debilitating illness or disease to perform everyday tasks and activities can be highly rewarding.

Great Pay

Occupational therapists are rewarded for achieving their educational requirements with exceptional pay. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, those working in the field earned an average of $70,680 per year.

Possibility for Overtime

While not all therapists might be eligible for overtime, depending upon how their employer structures their salaries, earning time and a half for putting in extra hours can be a wonderful incentive and a great benefit of the work. Since there is a high demand for therapists, you might find that this benefit could easily result in the addition of thousands of dollars to your paycheck each year.

Registry Work

With the great demand for occupational therapists comes the ability to at times have a more flexible work schedule. The need for therapists means that some employers will allow registry workers to pick up extra shifts when they are available. And while not typically enjoying the benefits of a full-time employee (i.e. health and dental insurance, overtime) the pay could be much higher on an hourly rate (sometimes in the range of $40-50 per hour) since the employer does not have to cover these aspects of employee benefits.

Registry work can be a great option for stay-at-home parents who are still looking to work and earn a good paycheck but on a less regular basis (often only a day or two per week).

Interesting Work Environment

Working in a hospital or out-patient facility can be an interesting and exciting place in which to be employed. You may see, treat, and work with many interesting people and in a variety of unique situations.

Great Employee Benefits

Typically, a full-time occupational therapist can expect to receive good benefits from their employer. Beyond health and dental insurance, a therapist may be eligible for contributions to a retirement plan, possibly a pension plan, as well as bonuses based upon performance.

Geographic Selection

From smaller, rurally located towns to more urban environments, the need for occupational therapists is widespread nationally. This makes for great career mobility in almost any region of the country in which you are interested in working.

All in all, this is a career with lots of flexibility and great pay, if this sounds like something you might be interested in pursuing get started right away. Take a look at our comprehensive list of physical therapy schools and talk to an admissions counselor.

Perhaps you’ve always taken an interest in following a graphic design career path or love the idea of creating visual works that convey messages. Indeed, knowing how to convey messages to a specific audience is what web and graphic design careers are all about. You use many tools, including computer software programs, to develop logo concepts, Web pages and other stunning graphics.

One of the ways to get your career started is to earn a degree from one of the many online graphic design programs. You could also earn your degree at a traditional college or arts institute, however, online colleges give you the flexibility to work at your own pace and take the time to thoroughly understand course materials. This is especially important for web and graphic design as you’ll need to work with several different computer applications and software programs.

Graphic and Web Design Software

A major software publisher that you’ll learn in online web and graphic design programs is Adobe. Adobe publishes several programs that nearly all professional web and graphic professionals use to create works of art. In addition, many online web and graphic design schools, such as The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and DeVry University, use these software programs as a backbone to support the entire degree.

For example, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are two of the company’s graphics editing programs. Used together, these programs allow you to manipulate images, mix colors, and create graphics, logos and layouts with 2D and 3D capabilities. InDesign, also by Adobe, can be used when creating traditional types of marketing and graphic materials, such as flyers, brochures, posters and covers for magazines and books.

Adobe Dreamweaver is a program that web and graphic design students learn, which allows them to create pages and full websites. During courses that teach Dreamweaver, you’ll also learn basic and advanced techniques of CSS, JavaScript and other server-side scripting languages, which allows you to create and modify designs for the web. Adobe Flash Professional is a similar program that online web and graphic design programs usually include in the curriculum.

Audio-Video, Web and other Technologies

Depending on the specific program, other multimedia programs may also be included in the curriculum. For example, Rasmussen College’s online web and graphic design program includes audio-video editing courses that teach students how to create and modify video clips using software like Premiere and After Effects. For the Web, the program also teaches how to create effective database designs with MySQL. Other courses may include materials on how to use various what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) web editors, such as Microsoft Expression Web, CoffeeCup HTML Editor or even WordPress and Joomla.

Following graduation, you can use your web and graphic design degree to follow a couple different career paths. First and foremost, you can find work in nearly every industry, including the entertainment, business and education industries. You might work on a team, or solo, to develop graphics and layouts that support advertising or marketing efforts of the company.

The other major option you have, aside from gaining employment with a traditional employer, is to start a freelance or professional career. For example, you can open your own professional design studio, offering web and graphic design services to clients. When you follow this kind of path, your earnings are only limited by the fees you charge and the number of clients you can handle. All things considered, earning a degree from an online web and graphic design program opens up many doors to your future career.

Concierge Duties

You won’t typically find a concierge in smaller hotels unless you are staying at boutique or upscale resort style properties. The duties a concierge may undertake on a daily basis can run the gambit when it comes to fulfilling guest requests. From assisting with directions to and from the hotel or local landmarks, to helping make reservations, or ordering flowers, the concierge is the ‘go to’ person in the hotel when it comes to special requests and guest assistance.

The concierge is also often known for his or her knowledge regarding the surrounding area and the local ‘secrets’ and ‘insider information’ that you might not get from other hotel employees. The concierge can often utilize their contacts and connections in hospitality and service related sectors to provide clients with special or unique service or provide assistance in creating exceptional memories for those celebrating special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or trying to make an impression upon customers or clients.

How an Education Can Help

A formal education can assist someone who is interested in becoming a concierge in several ways. First off, having a degree, while not absolutely necessary for the type of work you’ll be doing, can be an advantage during your job search. Obviously, those with an education are likely to stand out to employers, and may be considered as candidates for further advancement within the hotel. Hotel hiring managers may see potential in these applicants, since they’ve already attained a degree, for further advancement within the hospitality business.

Having an education is also a great security feature in the event a candidate decides to move on from being a concierge. Whether he or she determines that concierge work just isn’t a long-term career option or that the job opportunity has taken them as far as they could advance and they feel it’s time to explore other options, a hotel management degree can help make a job transition easier, and decrease the amount of down time between jobs. One can even receive such a degree while working full time as a concierge as there are many traditional and online colleges that offer bachelors and masters degree programs in hospitality management. Check out the Hospitality Management Schools directory for a comprehensive list of such colleges.

Pay and Benefits

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ National Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for May 2008, concierges averaged a pay rate of $28,120. It isn’t necessarily just the base pay however, that concierges rely upon for their salary. Like a restaurant server or other service worker, concierges often receive tips and other benefits from their work. It often depends on hotel regulations as to what a concierge may and may not do when it comes to soliciting tips and other forms of income though. A concierge might find him or herself getting free tickets to sporting events, plays, or other attractions, which they might in turn give out to VIPs (often with an unspoken expectation of a monetary ‘gift’ or ‘gratuity’ in return). A concierge might also receive tips for going ‘above and beyond’ in meeting guest expectations and requests, and may be paid well for assisting in transporting guest luggage or making special deliveries for groups or individuals. These extra forms of income are often why a concierge’s base pay is limited.

Here are a few of the areas you might consider to help bolster your adult continuing education whether it’s by way of a few choice courses or a full degree program.

Marketing
The subject of marketing is becoming ever more prevalent to many individuals, especially those who are working as self-employed or small business owners, or who even just want to make some extra money with side business endeavors.

Being able to understand marketing tactics, trends and opportunities — not only when it comes to operating a business but for promoting Internet activities and sales — can be crucial in today’s business world. From blogging to Internet resale or an online business, understanding the marketing of today can play an integral role in one’s continued success, which might make it a critical aspect of an adult continuing education program.

Small Business/Entrepreneurship
Many people have turned to the Internet and small business opportunities since the recent recession. While such options can be wonderful options if handled and explored properly, it often takes some knowledge of small business operations and entrepreneurship to truly take full advantage of them.

Courses relating to operating a small business, the rules and regulations governing such operations, accounting, marketing, human resources, and management might be some of the more relevant subject matter to consider if you are planning to move or have already moved into this line of work.

Internet/Web Design
While creating or designing websites may not be a personal goal or need, having at least a basic knowledge regarding the subject might be an area to consider in your continuing education. Even just a general background in the subject can make it easier to understand, develop, work with or commission the Internet applications and tools that you need to be successful in the modern business world. Having a general education in such matters can also provide more confidence when working with others and give you the background needed to at least have the vocabulary necessary to communicate with others regarding your technology needs.

Software Proficiency
It isn’t just being web savvy or being able to create your own web pages that can assist you in your continuing education. To advance your career or move into a new one, it may also be necessary to have an understanding of the latest and greatest software programs in order to make yourself more marketable. Being able to provide a prospective employer with a list of software programs with which you are proficient or even just utilize this knowledge to venture out and explore your own individual career ambitions can make for valuable additions to your adult continuing education.

From accounting programs to nursing certificate’s to information technology courses, browse through the continuing education online directory to find a program that will help you move up in your career.

After writing a question and choosing one answer choice to be the correct answer, test writers have four answer choices left to fill. One of the questions they ask at this point is whether there are any numbers that would make good trap answers. GMAT test-takers as a whole are predictable (so are most groups of people as a whole) and it’s not hard for the test writers to come up with some answers that will be very tempting. Part of your job in preparing for the GMAT is to become less predictable and less subject to these temptations. Let’s tackle a few examples.

The price of a jacket is reduced by 25%. During a special sale the price of the jacket is reduced another 10%. By approximately what percent must the price of the jacket now be increased in order to restore it to its original amount?

A) 32.5

B) 35

C) 48

D) 65

E) 67.5

So what’s the answer here? If 35 looks like a good option to you, you’re in good company. It seems that a 25% discount followed by a 10% discount should total a 35% discount. But if the question were really that easy it wouldn’t be on the GMAT. This is where test-taking savvy has to kick in. You aren’t going to spend your time on the GMAT adding together two numbers that appear in the problem and getting the correct answer. That’s way too easy. 35 is a trap answer, and you need to train yourself to spot trap answers. So what’s the real answer if it’s not 35?

Let’s make this more concrete and give the jacket a price. For simplicity, call it a $100 jacket. A 25% discount will be $25, so now we have a $75 jacket. Next, another 10% is taken off. 10% of 75 is 7.5, so the new price is 75 − 7.5 = 67.5. After the two discounts the jacket costs $67.50. (Now you can see why 35% is incorrect. The two discounts can’t simply be added, because the second one is being taken from a different base number (75) than the first one (100) is.) To get back to $100 we have to raise the price $32.50. Now we need to use the percent change formula: Percent change = (difference/original) X 100. In a percent increase problem, the “original” number will be the smaller one, so our formula is (32.5/67.5) X 100. We don’t need to do the full calculation because 32.5/67.5 is a little less than one half, and the only answer that’s in the ballpark is 48% in Answer C. As you can see, there are a lot of steps to this problem, and anyone who blithely picks 35 and moves on is missing all the important stuff.

Let’s look at another example.

Vivian drives to her sister’s house and back. She takes the exact same route both ways. On the trip out she drives an average speed of 50 miles per hour. On the trip back she drives an average speed of 70 miles per hour. What is her approximate average speed for the round trip in miles per hour?

A) 50

B) 58.3

C) 60

D) 61.7

E) 70

Does anything look tempting here? Something that seems logical, but is perhaps too good to be true? The trap answer, of course, is 60. It seems to make perfect sense — half way between 50 and 70 — but it’s just too easy. No matter how much you want to pick it, you have to tell yourself that if the problem could be solved that easily it wouldn’t be on the GMAT. So 60 is out. What else can we eliminate?

Common sense should tell you that answer can’t be 50 or 70. You can’t drive there at 50, come back at 70, and average 50 for the whole trip, for example. That makes no sense. It has to be somewhere between those numbers. Let’s look at our remaining answers, 58.3 and 61.7. One of these is closer to 50 and one is closer to 70. So apparently one of these trips — either the 50mph trip or the 70mph trip — has had a greater effect and is “pulling” the average speed closer to itself. Which one? When dealing with problems about rates, there are three parts to consider: rate, distance, and time. We know the rates here. The distance is the same for each trip. The determining factor, therefore, is time. It takes longer to make the trip at 50mph than at 70 mph, so Vivian spends more time at that speed. This means the average will be closer to 50 than 70, and the answer is B.

Another way to solve this problem is to plug a distance into the problem. Because the trip is the same distance each way it doesn’t matter what you choose — the answer will be the same no matter what. Mathematically, however, it will be much easier if you pick a number that is divisible by 50 and 70. So let’s make this a 350 mile trip. That means it will take Vivian 350 ÷ 50 = 7 hours to drive there, and 350 ÷ 70 = 5 hours to drive back. That’s a total of 12 hours to drive 700 miles. Thus, her average speed for the round trip is 700 ÷ 12 = 58.3.

Keep an eye out for answer choices that are too simple. If you remember that the GMAT is going to make you work for answers, you’ll avoid falling for the traps that ensnare so many test-takers.

Law Enforcement

Law enforcement within the criminal justice field can cover a wide swath of roles and career opportunities. From the local police department to the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and CIA, law enforcement positions cover a broad spectrum, and the duties and areas assigned to those within these ranks can be wide-reaching and vary significantly.

Law enforcement classes within a criminal justice degree can provide you with an idea of what options are available when it comes to this sector of the field as well as how these various divisions of law enforcement operate, their various jurisdictions, and their duties.

Cyber Crime

The explosive growth of cyber crime is making it an ever more pertinent aspect within the study of criminal justice. With the threat of identity theft to the ability of criminal or terrorist organizations to break thought the security systems of businesses, corporations, even governments, the need for those with a knowledge of cyber crime and cyber crime prevention methods is necessary.

Crime Scene Investigations

While out in the real world, the role of crime scene investigators might not be quite as glamorous as depicted on television, it might still be a relevant class to your criminal justice degree work. In a crime scene investigations course, you’re likely to learn the techniques to properly contain and search the scene of a crime, while discovering and recovering evidence that can lead to the arrest and conviction of criminals.

Juvenile Justice

The role of working with and rehabilitating juveniles can be distinctly different from that of similar work with adults. A course in juvenile criminal justice can better prepare students for this aspect of the criminal justice system in the event they chose to work in a role that focuses upon the rehabilitation of young adults.

Criminal Law

Knowing and understanding the law is critical when it comes to working in the criminal justice system. Whether enforcing the law as a police officer or FBI agent, working to support the law as a crime scene investigator, detective, or criminal profiler, or maintaining law and order as a corrections or security officer, a course or two in criminal law during your criminal justice education may help you in your career work within the field.

To get started take a look at schools that offer a criminal justice degree.
