Whether your interest in nursing started as a child or was
something you gradually realized you would like to do, one
of the best ways to get the feel of the work is to talk to
a practicing nurse. What the job appears to be from the outside
point of view, that of the patient and general public, and
what it is like to do, are often different. Having decided
this is for you the next stage is to look at how to become
qualified.
Nursing Qualifications
There are three ways to become a registered nurse. Completing
a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN), completing an Associate
Degree in Nursing (ADN), or completing a diploma program in
a hospital. The last can be used as a basis to complete a
Bachelor’s Degree at a later date. If the student has
a degree in another field, the credits from this can be negotiated
with the institution who run the courses to enable a transfer
to a Bachelor’s Degree also.
Each method of qualification involves classroom instruction
and practical work in hospitals and clinics. The student will
be assigned to a department and supervised by an experienced
person there. Not only is this valuable work experience but
it is also the time to ask as many questions as the student
can think of. Qualified staff will always value someone who
shows real interest in the work.
A period of time spent in different departments will give
a good understanding of the work involved and perhaps help
the student decide if there is an area in which he or she
would like to specialize. For instance operating theatre work
where patients tend to be asleep, or midwifery which is actively
engaging with women in all stages of their pregnancy and labor.

After qualifying in nursing with a degree or diploma the individual
has to obtain a license to practice through the National Licensing
Examination (NCLEX-RN). This is a computer based process and must
be passed. If a student fails, they will remain at that level until
they can demonstrate the required level of knowledge.
The Nursing Licensure Compact Agreement allows nurses to work in
states other than the one they trained in. This can be useful if
the nurse has to move to another State because their partner’s
job requires is or for other family commitments.
What Variety Does Nursing Offer?
During training the nurse will experience the different departments
which care for patients. For those who enjoy general care, working
with day care patients or those in for short stays for minor procedures
will have the satisfaction of answering questions and doing dressings.
They will learn how to help patients move comfortable at the same
time as protecting their own body from unnecessary damage by, for
example, not knowing how to life someone.
Working in the operating theater requires a different approach.
This involves assisting the surgeons accurately and swiftly. Accident
and emergency departments in hospitals offer many challenges to
medical staff both medically and emotionally. Patients with cancer
require specialist support and help as do their families. In other
words, each type of illness needs nurses who are trained in this
area.
Further Education in Nursing
By continuing to take courses relevant to the work, a nurse can
advance his or her own education and therefore possibilities of
supervising roles. Moving up the professional ladder is a way to
increase pay and responsibility.
