Finding an X-Ray Tech School
If this is a field that you are interested in, then finding a suitable
x-ray technician school is one of the first steps. It can be overwhelming
when first deciding what x-ray technician school to apply to. There
are hundreds, and it is important to make sure that what you do
is the right thing for you, as you will be putting time and effort
into it. When choosing a x-ray technician school make sure that
the school has the proper accreditation. What you need to find out
is if the school is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on
education in Radiologic Technology. This will, to an extent, guarantee
the quality of the training you will receive at the school. Moreover,
it will make you eligible to be one of the students who can take
the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam. Taking
this ARRT exam is required for getting your professional certification.
Most of the X-ray technician programs include two years of in-class
training and a clinical hands-on component. You will learn all the
basics when it comes to human anatomy, operation of the x-ray machines,
patient safety and pathology. The x-ray technician training will
provide you with all the basic knowledge that an x-ray technician
is required to have.
Although you will be primarily concerned with your radiological
studies, it is worth trying to find a school where you will be able
to enroll in classes like physiology, radiation physics, imaging
and protection. This will provide a more rounded education, helping
you wrap your head around the bigger picture, the human body.
Once you have graduated from the x-ray technician training course,
then you will need to take the certification exam. This certification
exam will go over a wide variety of topics that you were trained
in including radiology procedures, equipments, caring for patients
and others. You can apply for this certification program in your
own state or through a national organization such as the American
Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
On the Job
X-Ray technicians can work in a variety of locations including hospitals,
dental and medical practices, and diagnostic imaging centers. Whether
you find a job in a hospital, a private clinic, doctors’ office,
or health care center, or even in a government or military hospital,
you will be required to perform a wide variety of tasks that you
will have received specific training for through an accredited x-ray
technician training school. X-ray technicians work closely with
nurses, doctors and radiologists, to ensure that x-rays are completely
properly and that they can be used to provide proper diagnosis of
the patients. In addition, an x-ray technician will work with patients
to ensure that the x-rays that are needed are performed properly
and without any difficulties. Many patients have a lot of anxiety
about these procedures, so ensuring that they are as relaxed as
possible will help and ensure that the x-ray procedure does not
have to be redone.
X-ray technicians are also responsible for transporting the patients,
setting up the equipment, making sure the patient is in the exact
right position, ensuring the proper precautions are taking to mitigate
any risk to the patient, studying the images, and assisting the
radiologist in identifying the problems as shown by the x-rays.
