Homeland Security Degree

Choosing to utilize your criminal justice degree in a way that furthers work in the field of homeland security can be a highly rewarding use of such a degree. While a typical criminal justice degree might help you to pursue your interests and work within a homeland security department or field, specializing in homeland security could enable you to advance more effectively toward your career goals. With a focus in homeland security, you are likely to be exposed to more specialized courses that can hone specific skills needed in many homeland security roles.

Homeland Security
The subject of homeland security can encompass many different aspects of national security and prospective threats facing the country. From understanding how the nation’s security may be affected by various events at home or around the world, to gauging its strong points, weak points, and areas for improvement, there are numerous subjects that can come into play regarding homeland security. Not only this, but it is important to understand the laws that relate to homeland security and the techniques and processes involved in upholding and applying these laws.

With a degree focused upon homeland security, you might also study the dangers facing our nation, various terrorist risks, disaster scenarios and preparedness, how to defend infrastructure, and the types of weapons and possible attack strategies that could be used by those looking to do harm to the nation and its citizens.

Behavioral Analysis
Understanding how various groups (i.e. sexes, ages, nationalities) behave and act in response to different situations can be instrumental in many criminal justice roles. Being able to profile certain characteristics or responses to questions that are asked of suspects or criminals as well as being able to review and analyze those reactions and determine what they mean or might mean can be critical to pinpointing those who are planning or have committed criminal actions that may affect homeland security. Having an educational background in behavioral analysis might also help you to know how criminals or terrorists think and act, and may help you to better defend the nation from these people.

Cultural Diversity
The way people behave may often be affected by their culture or the culture in which they are living. With a degree in homeland security, you may learn about and be better educated in understanding both friends and foes alike when it comes to the protection of the homeland. This can be important in knowing how to better defend ourselves from potential threats both at home and abroad.

Being open to other cultures and making an effort to understand their points of view may enable better incorporation of these allies and enemies into our way of life. While our nation will never be loved by all, the more we can learn about those challenging our nation’s security, the better we’ll hopefully be prepared to prevent or defend against acts of violence or threats against us.
