I have been going to Strayer Online for 2 years now to finish the degree I
started oh-so-many-years-ago before I got married. So far here is what I
can contribute based on my experience:
1. I don't use their financial aid but I get reimbursed by my company to
go. My company only pays for classes at accredited universities. My company
has never turned down my reimbursement for a Strayer class.
2. All of my ODU & TCC credits transferred over to Strayer with no problems
at all.
3. I have had very good professors. Most have their PH.D's and all have
their Master's degrees.
4. I have only had one professor which didn't communicate that well. They
were traveling quite a bit for their "real" job and that was causing slow
responses.
5. Several other IS & IT professionals in my line of work have or are going
for Strayer Degrees. They are all well received for doing so & not looked
down upon for using Strayer. ECPI and the like are looked down upon in that
industry.
6. Yes the books are expensive. I resolve that by getting mine on Craig's
List or Ebay. I on average save 50% - 75% or more for my books this way.
Then if I don't need the book anymore I sell it to another student at a
reasonable cost to help them save $$ as well.
7. The classes are challenging to me - not impossible but challenging. I
have a 4.0 GPA & will be finishing my BSIS this time next year. These
classes wouldn't be easy to an 18 year old freshman like they would be for
a 40 year old IT specialist.
8. Strayer is one of the only universities (online or otherwise) that
offers IA concentrations for their degrees - homeland security, Security
administration, criminal justice, etc.
9. Yep the classes are expensive but so is setting up the online portion of
these courses. Have you been to any type of certification training classes
lately? They run several thousands of $$$$ for a week .... and they don't
give you college credit either.
No, I don't think Strayer is perfect .... none of them are. I had more
administrative issues with ODU that I have with Strayer.
Here's what I think the difference might be: I am an older adult (almost
40) and have 20 years of work force experience. I need this degree to
progress to the next level at my company. My work experience and resume
already speak for the rest of my experience. Strayer *specifically states*
that they cater to working adults - like me!
If you are fresh out of high school I don't think Strayer is a good option
for you. Why? Well first self discipline and time management. Those skills
come with age & practice. The isolation that the online courses produce can
be bad for younger people.
I will be glad when my Strayer degree is done & darn proud I got it!!!
